Reef-Edge Snorkel

The Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, is the second-longest reef system in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Visibility in the clearest conditions exceeds 100 feet, and the reef face supports over 500 fish species including nurse sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, and large schools of snapper and grunt. Hol Chan Marine Reserve at the southern tip of Ambergris Caye is the most visited snorkel destination in the country.

Shark Ray Alley, an adjacent site within the Hol Chan reserve, is a shallow sandbar where nurse sharks and southern stingrays congregate year-round. Snorkelers enter shallow water with sharks resting nearby, a low-risk encounter that produces the most dramatic underwater experience available to non-divers in Belize. The site evolved from a fish cleaning station used by local fishermen and the animals are habituated to human presence.

Belize's coral restoration programs, particularly work by Fragments of Hope in southern Belize and the Coral Restoration Foundation Belize, have added restored reef sections to some snorkel routes near Placencia and Laughingbird Caye. Visiting these areas provides both a marine encounter and direct exposure to ongoing conservation work.
