Belize runs on two seasons: dry (December to May) and green (June to November), with temperatures that barely move all year. March and April are the most reliable months; late May and November buy nearly the same weather at shoulder prices. How Belize's year actually works
Two seasons, not four: dry (December to May) and green (June to November)
Belize keeps it simple. The dry season runs roughly December through May: sunny days, cooling trade winds on the coast, highs in the low-to-mid 80s, and the calm, clear water that makes the reef famous. The green (rainy) season runs June through November, with rainfall peaking in September and October. Even then, rain usually arrives as afternoon bursts rather than washed-out days, and August often delivers a brief dry spell locals call the 'little dry.'
Temperature barely moves all year. The real variables are rain, humidity, water clarity, crowds, and price. High season and high prices track the dry months from December to April. The shoulder months of May and November are the sweet spot for value: largely dry weather, thinner crowds, and rates well below peak.

Late April and May are the local secret: the Easter crowds are gone, the cayes are quiet, and the sea is at its calmest before summer at shoulder-season prices.

Picking your month: weather, water, and what's happening
December to February: the classic Caribbean escape with dry, breezy days, pleasant nights, and peak prices around the holidays. March to April: the driest, most reliable months of the year, with calm seas, superb visibility on the reef, and Easter as the one crowded week. May: hot and dry, quiet, excellent diving. June to July: the green season begins; mornings are usually bright, afternoons can bring rain, and lush jungle landscapes peak. This is also when sargassum season is typically at its height on east-facing beaches.
August: the 'little dry,' a popular family window with decent odds of sunshine. September to October: the wettest months and the heart of hurricane season; many resorts close briefly, but September is also Belize's biggest celebration month, with St. George's Caye Day (September 10) and Independence Day (September 21) carnivals. November: the rains taper, everything reopens, and Garifuna Settlement Day (November 19) in Hopkins and Dangriga is one of the great cultural experiences in the country.

Whale shark season at Gladden Spit near Placencia runs March through June, around the full moons. It is the one wildlife event worth planning an entire trip around.
Match the month to the mission
Best time by activity: reef, ruins, jungle, and beach
Diving and snorkeling: April through June brings the calmest seas and best visibility, with whale sharks as the bonus. Fishing is world-class year-round, with tarpon peaking in summer. Caving and inland adventure: the dry months of February through May mean lower river levels for cave tubing and the ATM Cave. Note that ATM Cave can close after heavy rain in the wet season. Maya ruins and jungle: dry season for easier trails, green season for waterfalls at full power, fewer visitors, and the jungle at its most alive.
Beach-first travelers should weight December through April for the surest sun, and check sargassum conditions for June through September stays on east-facing beaches. The honest caveats
Hurricane season, sargassum, and how to play the value windows
Hurricane season officially runs June 1 to November 30, but direct hits on Belize are rare. The practical risk is a few days of heavy rain and disrupted boat schedules. If you travel in this window, book refundable rates, buy trip insurance before any storm is named, and build a flexible day into reef plans. September and October carry the highest risk and the lowest prices; some island resorts use these months for annual maintenance closures.
Sargassum is the other seasonal honest-truth: in recent years, including a heavy 2026 season, east-facing beaches have seen significant seaweed from roughly April through August. It is regional and changes weekly. West-facing spots like Secret Beach stay largely clear, and the reef itself is unaffected for diving. If a picture-perfect beach is the core of your trip, either travel November through March or pick your base using current conditions rather than brochure photos.
