Set expectations first
Belize is not cheap Central America, and that's the deal you're making
Let's say it plainly: Belize costs more than Mexico or Guatemala next door, often noticeably more. English-speaking, dollar-pegged (BZ$2 = US$1, and US dollars are accepted everywhere), with a small population and most goods imported, it prices closer to the Caribbean than to backpacker Central America. Budget travelers feel the difference at every meal; mid-range and up, the value equation flips, because what you're buying (a barrier reef, jaguar jungle, and Maya cities within two hours of each other) has no real substitute at any price.
Realistic daily budgets per person, excluding international flights: shoestring US$60-90 (hostels, street food, buses, one big tour spread over the week); mid-range US$150-250 (nice guesthouses or 3-star resorts, restaurant meals, a tour every other day); upscale US$350-600+ (beachfront and jungle-lodge living with private guiding). A typical mid-range couple spends US$3,500-5,000 for a 7-day trip, all-in except flights.
Flight cost swings with distance, so check flight times and distances from major US gateways before locking in the week's total.

The big four line items
Lodging, tours, food, transport: where the budget actually goes
Lodging is the swing factor: dorms run US$15-30, decent private rooms US$50-100, beach resorts US$150-400, and luxury lodges from US$400 to well past US$1,000 in high season. Tours are the second-biggest line and the hardest to cut without gutting the trip: figure US$145 for the ATM Cave, about US$80 for a half-day Hol Chan snorkel or US$150 for the full-day sail, US$300+ for Blue Hole diving, US$135 for Caracol and US$105 for cave tubing, all per person.
Food spans US$3 street tacos and US$8-12 rice-and-beans plates to US$20-40 mains at resort restaurants; drinking local (Belikin beer, rum) keeps bar tabs civil. Transport is where smart travelers save the most: the water taxi to the cayes costs a fraction of the 15-minute domestic flight, shared shuttles beat private transfers, and the old-school local buses on the George Price Highway cost just a few dollars between towns. Rental cars (US$70-120/day with insurance) only pay off for Cayo-and-south road-trip itineraries.

Spend less, lose nothing
How to cut the bill without cutting the trip
The season is the single biggest lever: shoulder months (May-June, November) drop lodging 20-40% below high-season rates, and September-October goes lower still if you'll trade rain odds for savings. Base choice is the second lever: Caye Caulker over Ambergris, Hopkins over Placencia, and in-town San Ignacio over a jungle lodge. Each swap saves real money while keeping the same reef, the same ruins, the same tours.
On the ground: eat where locals eat (the US$8 stew-chicken lunch beats most US$25 tourist dinners), hit happy hours, take the water taxi, and book tours directly with licensed local operators rather than through resort desks. Skip the over-bundled all-inclusive tour packages sold online. Belize is easy to book piece-by-piece, and that's reliably cheaper. What not to cheap out on: licensed guides for caves and diving, and travel insurance. Those aren't the places to save.

Three real one-week budgets, per person
Backpacker, US$550-800/week: hostel dorms on Caye Caulker and in San Ignacio, street food and market meals, water taxi and chicken buses, one splurge tour (make it the ATM Cave), snorkel gear rented off the dock. Comfortable mid-range, US$1,200-1,800/week: private rooms or small resorts split between an island and Cayo, restaurant dinners, shared shuttles or one short domestic flight, three or four big tours including ATM and a full reef day.
Upscale, US$2,500-4,500+/week: a jungle lodge in Cayo plus a beachfront resort on Ambergris or Placencia, private transfers and domestic flights, private guiding, a Blue Hole flight or dive day, spa afternoon included. Add international airfare (commonly US$350-700 from U.S. hubs to BZE), the US$20 land/sea or ~US$75 air departure-tax component usually baked into tickets, and 10-12.5% service charges that many resorts add to bills.

When is Belize cheapest?
