Seven days is the practical minimum if you want to experience more than one region. A 7-day trip commonly splits as 3 nights in San Ignacio (Cayo) and 4 nights on one island (San Pedro or Caye Caulker), enough time to do ATM Cave and one or two Mayan ruins in Cayo, then snorkeling at Hol Chan and a free day on the water. With only 5 days, stay in one region and go deep rather than rushing between them. Ten to fourteen days is the sweet spot for combining jungle, mainland coast (Hopkins or Placencia), and the cayes without feeling rushed between transfers.

The Cayo + cayes split is the most common itinerary by far, nearly every multi-destination trip report uses this as the backbone. The standard pattern: fly into Belize City, shuttle or drive to San Ignacio (2 to 4 nights), do ATM Cave and Mayan ruins, then shuttle or water taxi to Caye Caulker or San Pedro (3 to 4 nights) for reef, snorkeling, and island time. Many first-timers add a Tikal day trip from San Ignacio (requires crossing to Guatemala, arrange with your tour operator). The trio that comes up repeatedly in trip reports as 'must-do': ATM Cave, Tikal, and a snorkel day at Hol Chan/Shark Ray Alley.

Both sequences work, pick based on your flight logistics. If you land in the afternoon, going to San Ignacio first makes sense (it's a 2-hour drive; the cayes require a water taxi that stops running in the evening). Many travelers who start at the cayes say the adjustment from beach mode to jungle excursion mode is harder than the reverse. A practical rule: if ATM Cave is a priority and you want the earliest-departure slot (smallest crowds), anchor Cayo early in your trip before beach fatigue sets in. If you're flying into San Pedro directly (domestic hop from BZE), start there and end in Cayo before flying home.

With 10 to 12 days, the three-region circuit works comfortably: 3 to 4 nights Cayo, 2 to 3 nights Hopkins or Placencia, 3 to 4 nights on the cayes (split between San Pedro and Caye Caulker or choose one). Hopkins adds Garifuna culture, Bocawina hikes, and bioluminescent lagoon tours without major extra cost. Placencia adds the southern reef and a more resort-oriented pace. The Cayo to Hopkins shuttle runs the Hummingbird Highway, a scenic drive worth doing rather than flying. With 14 days, you can add a second island (Caye Caulker + San Pedro) or a night at Chan Chich Lodge in Orange Walk for jungle immersion in a very different ecosystem.

Dry season (December to April) has the most reliable weather for diving, snorkeling, and jungle hiking, visibility is best and rain is minimal. It's also peak season with higher prices and more crowds at ATM Cave and the cayes. Green season (June to November) offers 20 to 30% lower hotel rates, fewer tourists, and lush jungle. Diving visibility drops during heavier rain periods and some tour operators reduce departure frequency. Multiple trip reports confirm that rain during green season is typically morning or afternoon squalls, not all-day events, many travelers have excellent weeks despite 'bad' season timing. Hurricane risk is real in August to October but direct hits are historically rare. The lowest-risk sweet spots: November (end of wet season, still good rates) and late April to May (shoulder season before rainy season starts).
