Historic Site Walks

Belize's colonial history is compact and often overlooked in favor of its Maya heritage. Belize City retains a grid of Victorian-era wooden buildings along the canal and seafront. St. John's Cathedral, built in 1812 by enslaved workers using ballast bricks from English ships, is the oldest Anglican church in Central America and still holds weekly services. Government House, now the House of Culture, dates to 1814 and displays colonial period furniture and artifacts.

Corozal Town in the north has a well-maintained town square with the oldest public library in Belize (1885) and murals by artist Manuel Villamor Reyes tracing Corozal's history from Maya occupation through sugar industry dependence. The town was largely rebuilt after Hurricane Janet in 1955, making surviving colonial-era structures particularly notable.

Dangriga's Pen Cayetano Studio and Gallery documents Garifuna history through painting and is one of the most significant contemporary arts spaces in the country. The founder, known as the Father of Punta Rock, opened it as a living archive of Garifuna cultural records, combining visual art with oral history sessions for visitors who arrange visits in advance.
