Placencia is where Garifuna culture meets Caribbean beach life. The peninsula is a living celebration of Belize's diverse heritage, from the drumbeats of Seine Bight to the flavors of the annual Chocolate Festival.
Seine Bight is a Garifuna village with deep roots. Traditional dugu ceremonies, punta drumming, and women weaving wicker crafts are everyday expressions of a culture that survived colonial upheaval, and welcomes curious visitors with open arms.
Each May, Placencia hosts the annual Chocolate Festival, celebrating the peninsula's cacao-growing heritage. Visitors tour cacao farms, attend chocolate-making workshops, and taste some of the world's finest single-origin Belizean chocolate.
The sea defines Placencia's rhythm. Lobster season opening on June 15th is practically a public holiday, and freshly caught snapper, jack, and conch appear on every menu. Local fishing cooperatives welcome visitors on dawn expeditions into the Caribbean.
Placencia's June celebration features lobster prepared every way imaginable, grilled whole, in ceviche, stuffed with rice, in local Belizean dishes, all accompanied by live punta and soca music and an infectious festive atmosphere.
Placencia has a thriving community of local artists. Galleries and studios along the famous sidewalk showcase paintings, sculptures, and jewelry inspired by the reef, the rainforest, and Garifuna symbolism, each piece a story worth taking home.
