Eladio's Chocolate Adventure is a family-owned and operated eco-tour in the village of San Pedro Columbia, Toledo District, focused on organic production of cacao and an authentic chocolate experience. The entire Pop family helps run the farm using traditional Mayan techniques and knowledge in their operations.
The farm sits within sight of the historic Maya temple of Lubaantun. Fruits, herbs, flowers, plants, and animals fill the 30-acre property, and Eladio will show you around and share his knowledge of organic farming, cacao cultivation, and the importance of the symbiotic relationship between creatures and plants on the farm.
The traditional chocolate-making class takes guests through the full journey from soil to seed and bean to bar, covering the whole traditional Mayan process of harvesting, roasting, and pressing cacao. Guests roast and grind nature's treasure with stone tools by participating in a traditional chocolate demonstration, then savor the distinctive flavor of a dark chocolate drink enjoyed by only the most elite Mayas when their civilization was young. The tour culminates with a delicious lunch ( Full package Tour) prepared with love by the Pop family at their hilltop restaurant.
The cacao farm trail takes guests through banana trees, citrus groves, and other medicinal plants in a hands-on way, with opportunities to taste, smell, and touch everything along the path. Along the trail you can also spot local insects, birds, and the famous Agouti, a small brown rabbit, and other wildlife.
For those wanting to stay longer, Eladio's offers overnight stays in the guest house or camping on the concrete rooftop, surrounded by pristine jungle mountains and rivers. Overnight guests enjoy jungle hikes, swimming in the local rivers, traditional Mayan food, and sleeping under the stars. The experience suits large and small groups alike.
Eladio and his wife Virginia built Agouti Cacao Farm together while raising 15 children on the land, growing organic cacao in a way that is environmentally friendly and healthy. For Eladio, farming meaningfully and providing for family and others is happiness.
