Garifuna Rhythm

The Garifuna people descended from West African survivors of a shipwreck off St. Vincent in the 17th century, who intermarried with indigenous Arawak and Carib populations. Exiled to Central America by the British in 1797, they established communities along the Belizean coast, primarily in Hopkins, Dangriga, and the Stann Creek District. Their culture has been listed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage register since 2001.

The Lebeha Drumming Center in Hopkins is the most accessible community-led drumming space, where visitors can watch or participate in punta rhythm sessions led by local masters. Punta music is built on a percussion foundation, the primero (tenor drum) and segunda (bass drum), layered with call-and-response vocals. Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 marks the arrival of the first Garifuna settlers in 1802 and is the largest cultural celebration in the country.

Hudut, a fish and coconut stew served with mashed plantain, is the signature Garifuna dish and widely available in Hopkins and Dangriga restaurants. Food preparation demonstrations offered through rural tourism operators provide cultural context that performance-only experiences miss, and the preparation process itself is part of the story.
