Belize's domestic network is run by two carriers, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, flying small turboprops like the Cessna Caravan on short hops between the international airport, Belize City Municipal, and airstrips across the country. Both are long-established, safety-conscious operators with frequent daily rotations. For most travelers the practical answer is the same as with the water taxis: book whichever airline has the departure time that fits your day, and compare prices on both sites since fares on the same route differ by date.

The workhorse route is Belize City to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, about 20 minutes in the air with reef views the whole way. Caye Caulker, Dangriga, Placencia, Punta Gorda, and Corozal round out the main network, and both airlines time many flights to meet international arrivals at BZE. Airstrips are small and informal: you check in at a counter minutes from the plane, and boarding is a short walk across the tarmac. It is flying the way it used to be, and honestly part of the fun.

Both airlines fly the same domestic routes from two Belize City departure points: the international airport (BZE) and the Belize City Municipal airstrip (TZA) on the seafront downtown. The same hop is usually noticeably cheaper from Municipal, so if you are starting a domestic flight from Belize City rather than connecting off an international arrival, a short taxi to Municipal can save real money. On arrival days, connecting directly at BZE is worth the premium because your bags walk with you from one counter to the next.

Book on the airline sites directly; both publish schedules and sell tickets online, and around holidays the popular San Pedro rotations do sell out. Small planes mean real weight limits, and soft duffels are easier to fit in the hold than hard-shell cases. Checked allowances are lower than international standards, with excess weight billed at the counter when space allows. If your itinerary is tight, confirm the last rotation of the day for your route rather than assuming an evening flight exists.

The math that matters: San Pedro is about 20 minutes by air versus roughly 90 by water taxi plus the taxi to the marine terminal, so the flight protects your first island evening after a mid-afternoon landing. Placencia is a short domestic hop versus 3.5 to 4.5 hours by road, which is the strongest case for flying in the country. San Ignacio has no scheduled airstrip service worth planning around, so go by shuttle or rental car. Caye Caulker splits the difference: the ferry is cheap and easy, so fly only when timing is tight.

If you are connecting straight off an international arrival, clear immigration and customs, then follow signs for the domestic counters in Terminal 1, all inside the same building. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air both time rotations around the midday bank of US arrivals, so a 2 PM landing usually still makes an island connection with daylight to spare.
