Indian Creek Mayan Arts Women's Group has been operating since 2011 and was formally registered on June 27, 2013. The group is comprised of 8 active members based in Indian Creek Village, Toledo District. They are in the business of selling Maya cultural experience, quality handmade souvenirs, and Mayan and Belizean style catering.
Over the years, the business has grown rapidly, diversifying its products and services across Southern Belize. Indian Creek Mayan Arts Women's Group has become a well known business that provides an authentic Maya cultural experience through customized tour packages and culinary cuisine.
Guests are welcomed by being smoked with an incense burner using copal sap, then offered a welcome drink, the traditional chocolate drink. From there, the experience includes hands-on activities such as the process of corn masa making, tortilla making, chocolate making from scratch, extracting sugarcane juice using a manual tool, prepping lunch together, and playing a little tune on the marimba instrument. Guests also learn a bit about how the women raise their children, and take part in jippi jappa weaving. The visit closes out with the cultural dance: marimba and harp dance. For small groups (2-10), the group plays Bluetooth music; for bigger groups (10 and up), they perform a live Marimba dance.
Group members also create handmade souvenirs including wood and slate carvings, beaded jewelry, jippi jappa baskets, and weaved bags, among others.
The group also offers catering only (Mayan or Belizean cuisine) or lunch only, available by advance reservation. Groups of up to 50 guests are welcome, with larger groups split in two and rotated through the experience.
