Xanadu Island Resort sits about a mile south of San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye, fronting a quiet, palm shaded stretch of beach that looks out over Belize's barrier reef. The property is instantly recognizable for its monolithic dome buildings: five rounded, hurricane resistant structures that give the twenty condominium style suites a cool, curved, almost cave like interior unlike anything else on the island. A sixth conventional building rounds out the collection of studio, loft, one, two and three bedroom units, most with a full kitchen and a private furnished deck facing the garden or the ocean.

There is an onsite bar serving coffee, smoothies and cocktails, along with massage, facial and manicure services, but by design there is no onsite restaurant: Xanadu was Belize's first Green Globe certified hotel and prefers to send guests to the many small restaurants within a five minute walk, arranging reservations and after dinner pickup on request. The activity desk can also book diving, snorkeling, sailing and fishing trips out to the reef and the Blue Hole.
It suits couples looking for a quieter, architecturally distinctive alternative to the bigger beach resorts, and families or small groups who want the space of multiple bedrooms and a real kitchen under one roof. Its beachfront location a short golf cart or bike ride from San Pedro town makes it an easy base for reef trips by day and a stroll into town for dinner by night.
