Three weeks is enough to travel Belize in one direction rather than out and back. This route runs north from Belize City through Lamanai and Crooked Tree, west into Cayo for the caves and Caracol, southeast along the Hummingbird into Garifuna country and Cockscomb, down to Placencia, then north to the cayes to finish. Seven bases, but almost no backtracking.

Belize is small enough that a three-week trip can cover the whole country without ever retracing a leg, and that is the organising idea here. The route is built as a loop that opens in the north, where almost no visitors go, works west through the country's cave and ruin heartland, drops southeast into jaguar country, and comes back up the coast to the reef. Every hotel change moves you forward. The result is a trip that feels like traveling through Belize rather than commuting out from a base.

Phase 01

North: rivers, ruins and birds

Days 1 to 2

Belize City + Central Coast

Arrive and explore Belize City, the Museum of Belize, St. John's Cathedral, and the House of Culture. Day 2: Altun Ha Maya site (closest to the city) combined with a wildlife canoe trip spotting crocodiles, iguanas, and turtles along the river.

Day 3

Community Baboon Sanctuary + Belize Zoo

Morning: Bermudian Landing's Community Baboon Sanctuary, home to 1,000+ black howler monkeys. Afternoon: the Belize Zoo, home to dozens of native species in naturalistic enclosures, all of them rescued, confiscated, or transferred from rehabilitation facilities.

Day 4

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

16,400 acres of lagoons and marsh. Dawn canoe tour for peak birding, November to May is prime season for jabiru storks, among the largest flying birds in Central and South America, alongside dozens of other species.

Day 5

Lamanai, Orange Walk

Boat tour from Orange Walk Town along the New River to Lamanai, the site with the longest continuous occupation in the Maya world (3,000+ years). The journey itself passes crocodiles, kingfishers, and howler monkeys before delivering you to unique limestone-carved masks that are unlike anything else in the region.

Day 6

San Ignacio, Western Cayo

Transfer south and west to San Ignacio. Afternoon visit to Cahal Pech on the edge of town, 34 structures, a museum with pre-Classic artifacts, and views across the Belize River valley.

Day 7

ATM Cave

Full-day Actun Tunichil Muknal. Wade and swim through the cave entrance into chambers holding complete Maya skeletons and ceramic vessels dating back over 1,000 years, the Crystal Maiden skeleton is considered the most complete in Belize.

Phase 02

West and south: caves, jaguars, coast

Day 8

Caracol

Early departure for Caracol through Chiquibul Forest. At its peak, Caracol had a population exceeding 100,000, more than twice today's Belize City. The Caana temple, at about 140 feet, still dominates the jungle canopy.

Day 9

Xunantunich + El Pilar

Hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River to Xunantunich. El Castillo's carved friezes are among the finest in Belize. Afternoon: El Pilar, a partially excavated site on the Belize-Guatemala border with an extensive Maya forest garden.

Day 10

Barton Creek Cave + Mountain Pine Ridge

Barton Creek Cave by canoe, a silent float through chambers where Maya ceremonial deposits remain on the ledges. Afternoon drive through Mountain Pine Ridge to Rio On Pools and Rio Frio Cave.

Day 11

Caves Branch, Hummingbird Highway

Nohoch Che'en Park: cave tubing through the Caves Branch river system. Choose the standard route or the more challenging Waterfall Cave Expedition, six underground waterfalls, rock-climbing sections, and deep plunge pools.

Day 12

Hopkins, Stann Creek

Drive southeast on the Hummingbird Highway, stop at Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce Factory near Dangriga. Arrive in Hopkins, a genuine Garifuna fishing village where the food, music, and culture are unlike anywhere else in Central America.

Day 13

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Full day in the world's first jaguar preserve. More than 120,000 acres of protected rainforest with 300+ bird species, 250+ orchid species, and all five of Belize's wild cat species. Evening guided walks offer the best opportunity to look for jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, and jaguarundis, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Day 14

Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Zip-lining and rappelling in Mayflower Bocawina's canopy, with treks to Antelope Falls and Three Sisters Falls. The park contains three Maya ceremonial sites that most visitors to Belize never reach.

Day 15

Red Bank Village (Jan to Mar) or Monkey River

January to March: hike to Red Bank village's scarlet macaw viewing area, hundreds congregate to feed on seasonal fruit. Rest of year: boat tour to Monkey River village for howler monkeys, crocodiles, and waterbirds in a river delta ecosystem.

Day 16

Placencia

Transfer to Placencia on the 17-mile peninsula. Some of the best beaches on the Belize mainland, a Creole fishing village atmosphere, and more good restaurants than anywhere else on the southern coast.

Phase 03

Finish on the reef

Day 17

Gladden Spit Dive / Silk Cayes

Full moon periods March to June: boat to Gladden Spit for the chance to swim alongside whale sharks feeding on spawning snapper, adult whale sharks can reach around 40 feet. Outside season: dive Glover's Reef, one of the most pristine marine environments in the Western Hemisphere.

Day 18

Ambergris Caye, San Pedro

Domestic flight from Placencia to San Pedro. Ambergris is Belize's most cosmopolitan island, spend the afternoon exploring by golf cart and choosing a dive shop for the days ahead.

Day 19

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Classic Ambergris reef day: Hol Chan Marine Reserve's channel and the famous Shark Ray Alley, nurse sharks and southern stingrays in waters shallow enough to stand.

Day 20

Great Blue Hole + Half Moon Caye

Full-day liveaboard to Lighthouse Reef. The Great Blue Hole is about 1,000 feet across and roughly 407 feet deep. Combine with Half Moon Caye Natural Monument to see nesting magnificent frigatebirds and red-footed boobies at the elevated bird sanctuary.

Day 21

Caye Caulker → Departure

Water taxi to Caye Caulker for a final 'Go Slow' morning, swim at The Split, buy hot sauce and handmade souvenirs. Afternoon ferry to Belize City for your international departure.

Insider tip

Build the 21-day route north-to-south: Lamanai boat trip in Orange Walk, west to San Ignacio's caves and ruins, southeast along the Hummingbird Highway to Hopkins and Cockscomb, down to Placencia, then finish on the cayes. This direction minimizes backtracking.

How to get around

Transfers, timings, and whether you need a car

Direction is the whole trick: north first, then west, then southeast, then back up to the cayes by air. Buses run frequently up the Philip Goldson Highway to Orange Walk and Corozal, shuttles cover the west and the Hummingbird, and the return north from Placencia to San Pedro is a domestic flight rather than a road day.

Doing the north first is what makes the rest of the route work. Attempting it later means a long backtrack up the same highway.
Lamanai is best reached by the New River boat from Orange Walk Town rather than by road: the approach through the lagoon is a large part of the experience.
Between Cayo and Hopkins, take the Hummingbird Highway rather than the Coastal Road. The Coastal Road looks shorter on a map and is loose gravel in sections.
Fly Placencia to San Pedro. Driving back north from the peninsula is most of a day for no gain.
On a trip this long, build in one unscheduled day per week. Rain, rough seas, and a missed boat are all likelier over 21 days than over 7.

Which part of each base to book

The area inside a base matters more in Belize than the star rating. These are the trade-offs at each stop on this route.

Orange Walk & Corozal

Northern Belize

Book here for: Lamanai by river boat, lagoon birding, Mennonite country, and a Mexico border crossing
Which area: Orange Walk Town for the Lamanai boat departure, Crooked Tree village for dawn birding on the lagoon, and Corozal Town if you are heading on to Chetumal or catching the seasonal boat to San Pedro.
Beach and swimming: Corozal Bay is calm and pretty but shallow and silty. This is not a swimming region.
The trade-off: Thin tourism infrastructure, few restaurants, and long drives between sights. It rewards travelers who already know they want birds, ruins, and rural Belize.

Northern Belize guide

Cayo, inland west

San Ignacio

Book here for: Caves, Maya sites, rivers, and the widest choice of guided day tours in Belize
Which area: Stay in town, within a few streets of Burns Avenue, if you want to walk to dinner and book tours in person. Choose a river lodge outside town if you want quiet, a pool, and birdsong at breakfast, and accept that you will need the lodge shuttle or a taxi for every evening meal.
Beach and swimming: None. Swimming here means the Macal River, a waterfall pool, or your hotel pool.
The trade-off: No sea. Cayo is a river-and-forest base, and the closest reef day is a full transfer away, so it works as half of a trip rather than all of it.

San Ignacio guide

Stann Creek, southern coast

Hopkins

Book here for: Garifuna culture, food, drumming, and a quiet coast with jungle day trips behind it
Which area: Ask exactly how far your hotel sits from the village center before you book: the strip runs for miles, and the north end is a long, hot walk from restaurants. Pick the village end for walkability and cheap local food, the quieter outskirts for a resort pool and beach frontage.
Beach and swimming: A long, calm, shallow stretch of khaki sand with almost no crowds. Sargassum can wash up on this coast in the summer months.
The trade-off: The village is long and thin, the reef is far enough offshore that snorkeling means a real boat trip, and there is much less nightlife or restaurant choice than Placencia or the cayes.

Hopkins guide

Stann Creek, southern coast

Placencia

Book here for: Mainland beach days with a proper restaurant scene, plus southern reef and whale shark trips
Which area: Book in Placencia Village at the southern tip if you want to walk everywhere and eat out every night. Book up the peninsula around Maya Beach or Seine Bight for wider, quieter sand and a resort pool, and budget for taxis or a golf cart if you want village dinners.
Beach and swimming: Soft khaki sand, gentle water, and easy swimming straight off the shore, which is not something every stretch of the Belize mainland offers.
The trade-off: The reef sits well offshore in the south, so snorkel days are long boat days. The peninsula is 25 miles from the highway, which makes it a commitment to reach and to leave.

Northern cayes

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Book here for: The widest choice of hotels, dive shops, and restaurants, and the easiest island logistics
Which area: Central San Pedro puts you within walking distance of dive shops, tour desks, and dinner. North Ambergris, above the bridge, has the most glamorous resorts and the best pools, but you will depend on the island ferry or a golf cart to get to town.
Beach and swimming: Miles of beachfront, though the reef sits close enough that much of the shore is shallow seagrass. Most resorts swim from docks and piers rather than straight off the sand.
The trade-off: Busier, pricier, and more built up than Caye Caulker. Traffic on the narrow main streets is real, and beachfront varies enormously by stretch.

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye guide

Northern cayes

Caye Caulker

Book here for: Barefoot island days and short, good-value reef trips
Which area: Anywhere on the island is walkable, so choose by noise: near the Split for bars and swimming, mid-island for a balance, and the quieter south end for sleep. Rooms with a pool are the exception here rather than the rule, so check if that matters to you.
Beach and swimming: No broad beach. Swimming happens at the Split, off private docks, and from boats, which suits people who want water access more than sunbathing space.
The trade-off: Small. Two or three nights suits most people, and the swimming is off the Split and off docks rather than from a wide beach.

Route trade-offs

What this route skips, and who should choose another

Best for

Travelers with three weeks who want to see the whole country, and who are comfortable with a hotel change every two or three days in exchange for near-total coverage.

Not ideal for

Anyone whose idea of a good three weeks is two places and a hammock. This is a moving itinerary, and the northern block in particular rewards curiosity more than comfort.

How to change it

Run it south to north
The route works reversed if your arrival time suits it better, but you will want to do the north as day trips from Belize City at the end rather than as a separate base.
Trade the north for more reef
If ruins and birds matter less than diving, drop the northern block and give five nights to the atolls instead.
Slow it to two bases per week
Cutting from seven bases to five and adding nights in Cayo and Hopkins turns this into a much gentler three weeks.

Booking order

What to book first

The ATM Cave, which is the only fixed point in a three-week trip that otherwise flexes.
The Lamanai boat tour from Orange Walk, which runs to a morning departure.
Any Blue Hole dive day, because the boats leave before dawn and go out only in settled weather.
Rooms: five nights in San Ignacio and five in Hopkins are the two blocks worth locking early. Everything else can be booked a few days out.

Season

When to travel, and what to swap when the weather turns

February to May is the strongest window overall for this route: driest in the south, best for the Caracol road, best reef visibility, and inside the Red Bank scarlet macaw season at the start.
The south is the wettest part of Belize from June to September, which hits the Cockscomb and Bocawina block hardest.
Whale sharks at Gladden Spit follow the full moon roughly March to June. If your dates cross one, put the Placencia block on it.
Some island hotels and restaurants close for part of September and October, and that is also the peak of the storm season, so confirm openings before booking a late-year trip.

Food and culture

What to eat along this route

Three weeks is enough to eat across all of Belize's traditions rather than sampling one. The north is Mestizo and Mennonite: escabeche, chimole, tamales, and the farm produce from Shipyard and Blue Creek. Cayo is market food and Creole staples. Stann Creek is Garifuna, where hudut and cassava bread are cooked in the villages that keep the tradition, and the Marie Sharp's factory near Dangriga is worth the stop. Toledo cacao turns up in chocolate all the way north. On the cayes it is conch season or lobster season, and the answer changes by month.

Responsible travel

Traveling this route well

Caves and archaeological reserves are licensed-guide-only for a reason. Book through an operator licensed by the Institute of Archaeology, and follow the guide's line through the chamber rather than your own.
Never buy an artefact, a carved fragment, or anything sold as ancient. Removing archaeological material from Belize is illegal, and the market is what drives looting.
Watch wildlife from a distance and never feed it, including the howler monkeys that come close at the sanctuaries. Habituated animals stop being wild animals.
Stay on marked trails in the reserves. Off-trail walking compacts nesting ground and spreads seeds where they should not go.
Do not touch, stand on, or collect coral, and keep a few feet of distance from nurse sharks and rays even when they come to you. Contact damages the animal and the reef.
Book community experiences through the village or the community association that runs them, so the fee reaches the people hosting you.

Is three weeks too long for Belize?

Not if you want the whole country. Belize is small, but the districts are genuinely different, and three weeks is roughly what it takes to include the north, Cayo, the Garifuna south, and the cayes without any leg feeling rushed. If you would rather go deep in two regions, fourteen days is the better length.

What direction should a 21-day Belize itinerary run?

North first, then west into Cayo, then southeast down the Hummingbird, then back up to the cayes by air. That order means every hotel change moves you forward and the only leg you repeat is the short flight north at the end.

Is northern Belize worth including?

For this length, yes. Lamanai by river boat and Crooked Tree at dawn are two of the best mornings in the country, and almost nobody is there. On shorter trips the north is the first thing to cut, which is exactly why it belongs on a three-week route.

How many hotel changes does this route involve?

Six, across seven bases in 21 days. That is roughly one move every three days. If that sounds like too much packing, the simplest fix is to drop the northern base and the second island, which brings it down to four.

How to get around

Transfers, timings, and whether you need a car

Doing the north first is what makes the rest of the route work. Attempting it later means a long backtrack up the same highway.
Lamanai is best reached by the New River boat from Orange Walk Town rather than by road: the approach through the lagoon is a large part of the experience.
Between Cayo and Hopkins, take the Hummingbird Highway rather than the Coastal Road. The Coastal Road looks shorter on a map and is loose gravel in sections.
Fly Placencia to San Pedro. Driving back north from the peninsula is most of a day for no gain.
On a trip this long, build in one unscheduled day per week. Rain, rough seas, and a missed boat are all likelier over 21 days than over 7.

Which part of each base to book

The area inside a base matters more in Belize than the star rating. These are the trade-offs at each stop on this route.

Orange Walk & Corozal

Northern Belize

Book here for: Lamanai by river boat, lagoon birding, Mennonite country, and a Mexico border crossing
Which area: Orange Walk Town for the Lamanai boat departure, Crooked Tree village for dawn birding on the lagoon, and Corozal Town if you are heading on to Chetumal or catching the seasonal boat to San Pedro.
Beach and swimming: Corozal Bay is calm and pretty but shallow and silty. This is not a swimming region.
The trade-off: Thin tourism infrastructure, few restaurants, and long drives between sights. It rewards travelers who already know they want birds, ruins, and rural Belize.

Northern Belize guide

Cayo, inland west

San Ignacio

Book here for: Caves, Maya sites, rivers, and the widest choice of guided day tours in Belize
Which area: Stay in town, within a few streets of Burns Avenue, if you want to walk to dinner and book tours in person. Choose a river lodge outside town if you want quiet, a pool, and birdsong at breakfast, and accept that you will need the lodge shuttle or a taxi for every evening meal.
Beach and swimming: None. Swimming here means the Macal River, a waterfall pool, or your hotel pool.
The trade-off: No sea. Cayo is a river-and-forest base, and the closest reef day is a full transfer away, so it works as half of a trip rather than all of it.

San Ignacio guide

Stann Creek, southern coast

Hopkins

Book here for: Garifuna culture, food, drumming, and a quiet coast with jungle day trips behind it
Which area: Ask exactly how far your hotel sits from the village center before you book: the strip runs for miles, and the north end is a long, hot walk from restaurants. Pick the village end for walkability and cheap local food, the quieter outskirts for a resort pool and beach frontage.
Beach and swimming: A long, calm, shallow stretch of khaki sand with almost no crowds. Sargassum can wash up on this coast in the summer months.
The trade-off: The village is long and thin, the reef is far enough offshore that snorkeling means a real boat trip, and there is much less nightlife or restaurant choice than Placencia or the cayes.

Hopkins guide

Stann Creek, southern coast

Placencia

Book here for: Mainland beach days with a proper restaurant scene, plus southern reef and whale shark trips
Which area: Book in Placencia Village at the southern tip if you want to walk everywhere and eat out every night. Book up the peninsula around Maya Beach or Seine Bight for wider, quieter sand and a resort pool, and budget for taxis or a golf cart if you want village dinners.
Beach and swimming: Soft khaki sand, gentle water, and easy swimming straight off the shore, which is not something every stretch of the Belize mainland offers.
The trade-off: The reef sits well offshore in the south, so snorkel days are long boat days. The peninsula is 25 miles from the highway, which makes it a commitment to reach and to leave.

Placencia guide

Northern cayes

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Book here for: The widest choice of hotels, dive shops, and restaurants, and the easiest island logistics
Which area: Central San Pedro puts you within walking distance of dive shops, tour desks, and dinner. North Ambergris, above the bridge, has the most glamorous resorts and the best pools, but you will depend on the island ferry or a golf cart to get to town.
Beach and swimming: Miles of beachfront, though the reef sits close enough that much of the shore is shallow seagrass. Most resorts swim from docks and piers rather than straight off the sand.
The trade-off: Busier, pricier, and more built up than Caye Caulker. Traffic on the narrow main streets is real, and beachfront varies enormously by stretch.

Northern cayes

Caye Caulker

Book here for: Barefoot island days and short, good-value reef trips
Which area: Anywhere on the island is walkable, so choose by noise: near the Split for bars and swimming, mid-island for a balance, and the quieter south end for sleep. Rooms with a pool are the exception here rather than the rule, so check if that matters to you.
Beach and swimming: No broad beach. Swimming happens at the Split, off private docks, and from boats, which suits people who want water access more than sunbathing space.
The trade-off: Small. Two or three nights suits most people, and the swimming is off the Split and off docks rather than from a wide beach.

What this route skips, and who should choose another

Best for

Travelers with three weeks who want to see the whole country, and who are comfortable with a hotel change every two or three days in exchange for near-total coverage.

Not ideal for

Anyone whose idea of a good three weeks is two places and a hammock. This is a moving itinerary, and the northern block in particular rewards curiosity more than comfort.

How to change it

Run it south to north
The route works reversed if your arrival time suits it better, but you will want to do the north as day trips from Belize City at the end rather than as a separate base.
Trade the north for more reef
If ruins and birds matter less than diving, drop the northern block and give five nights to the atolls instead.
Slow it to two bases per week
Cutting from seven bases to five and adding nights in Cayo and Hopkins turns this into a much gentler three weeks.

Booking order

What to book first

The ATM Cave, which is the only fixed point in a three-week trip that otherwise flexes.
The Lamanai boat tour from Orange Walk, which runs to a morning departure.
Any Blue Hole dive day, because the boats leave before dawn and go out only in settled weather.
Rooms: five nights in San Ignacio and five in Hopkins are the two blocks worth locking early. Everything else can be booked a few days out.

Season

When to travel, and what to swap when the weather turns

February to May is the strongest window overall for this route: driest in the south, best for the Caracol road, best reef visibility, and inside the Red Bank scarlet macaw season at the start.
The south is the wettest part of Belize from June to September, which hits the Cockscomb and Bocawina block hardest.
Whale sharks at Gladden Spit follow the full moon roughly March to June. If your dates cross one, put the Placencia block on it.
Some island hotels and restaurants close for part of September and October, and that is also the peak of the storm season, so confirm openings before booking a late-year trip.

Traveling this route well

Caves and archaeological reserves are licensed-guide-only for a reason. Book through an operator licensed by the Institute of Archaeology, and follow the guide's line through the chamber rather than your own.
Never buy an artefact, a carved fragment, or anything sold as ancient. Removing archaeological material from Belize is illegal, and the market is what drives looting.
Watch wildlife from a distance and never feed it, including the howler monkeys that come close at the sanctuaries. Habituated animals stop being wild animals.
Stay on marked trails in the reserves. Off-trail walking compacts nesting ground and spreads seeds where they should not go.
Do not touch, stand on, or collect coral, and keep a few feet of distance from nurse sharks and rays even when they come to you. Contact damages the animal and the reef.
Book community experiences through the village or the community association that runs them, so the fee reaches the people hosting you.
