Belize is built for adventure travel. ATM Cave, Caracol, and the Barrier Reef form the backbone of every serious active itinerary, connected by the Western Highway and the scenic Hummingbird Highway southeast.

Into the jungle
01
Day 1
Belize City
Arrive and settle into Belize City. Evening horse-drawn carriage tour of the historic district, St. John's Cathedral (built 1812, oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America) and the colonial waterfront.

Day 2
Nohoch Che'en Park → San Ignacio
Drive west along Western Highway, stopping at Nohoch Che'en Park for cave tubing through the Caves Branch river system. Continue to San Ignacio for the night.

Day 3
ATM Cave
Full-day Actun Tunichil Muknal tour. The demanding swim-through entrance is worth every effort, the inner chambers contain more intact Maya ritual artifacts than almost anywhere else in the Maya world.

Day 4
Caracol + Mountain Pine Ridge
Early departure for Caracol through the Chiquibul Forest. Howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, and keel-billed toucans are regularly spotted en route. Canaa temple at 143 feet remains the tallest structure in Belize.

Day 5
Xunantunich + Barton Creek Cave
Morning at Xunantunich, the hand-cranked ferry crossing is a Belizean tradition. Afternoon: Barton Creek Cave by canoe for a silent float past Maya ceremonial deposits.

Day 6
Hummingbird Highway → Hopkins
Drive the scenic Hummingbird Highway southeast, stopping at the Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce Factory near Dangriga. Arrive in Hopkins, an authentic Garifuna fishing village.

Day 7
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
Full day in Cockscomb, the world's first jaguar preserve, covering 128,000 acres of Maya Mountain rainforest. Hiking trails lead past waterfalls; evening guided walks offer the best chance of spotting jaguars, pumas, and ocelots.

Day 8
Mayflower Bocawina National Park
Zip-lining and rappelling through Mayflower Bocawina's canopy, followed by hikes to Bocawina Falls or Antelope Falls. Three Maya ceremonial sites, Mayflower, T'au Witz, and Maintzunum, are within the park.

Day 9
Placencia
Transfer down the peninsula to Placencia, home to Belize's finest mainland beaches and the highest density of restaurants in the country. Afternoon at leisure; evening seafood on the lagoon side.

Day 10
Gladden Spit + Silk Cayes
Boat out to Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve. On full moon periods March to June, whale sharks gather to feed on spawning snapper and grouper, the largest individuals reach 40 feet. Outside whale shark season, this is still world-class reef diving.

Day 11
Domestic flight → Ambergris Caye
Short domestic hop from Placencia to San Pedro. Ambergris Caye is Belize's largest and most developed island, golf carts, beach bars, dive shops, and the full spectrum of accommodation.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve + Shark Ray Alley
The classic Ambergris reef day: Hol Chan's coral channel, then Shark Ray Alley for close encounters with nurse sharks and southern stingrays in water shallow enough to stand.

Day 13
Great Blue Hole (advanced) or Turneffe Atoll
Advanced divers: full-day liveaboard to Lighthouse Reef's Great Blue Hole, 1,000 feet across, 450 feet deep, with massive stalactite formations and bull sharks. Jacques Cousteau named it one of the world's top 10 dive sites. Snorkelers or beginner divers: Turneffe Atoll, the closest of Belize's three coral atolls.

Day 14
Caye Caulker
Water taxi south to Caye Caulker for a final island day. The Split is the social hub, swim, have lunch, then kayak along the protected lagoon side.

Departure
Water taxi or domestic flight to PGIA for your international connection.
Insider tip
Time Gladden Spit whale shark dives around a full moon in April or May, the best combination of visibility and shark presence. Book the specialist boat from Placencia at least a week ahead.
