On a beach week, moving is the enemy. This route picks one island, spends six nights on it, and fills the days with a Hol Chan reef morning, a sailing afternoon, a Blue Hole flight or dive, and two days with nothing scheduled at all. One base, no hotel changes, deliberately relaxed.

Almost every Belize itinerary you will read splits a week between jungle and reef, and for a first trip that is usually right. This one does not, because a beach holiday and a highlights tour are different products. Seven days with one island base means you unpack once, learn where the good breakfast is, get the earliest snorkel boat twice, and never spend a morning with your bags in a hallway. The route below assumes Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker; the choice between them is the only real decision.

Arrive and settle

Day 1

Ambergris Caye, San Pedro

Fly directly to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Belize's largest island and the most developed beach destination in the country. Rent a golf cart for the afternoon (the only practical way to explore the island's north and south ends), find your bearings, and choose a beachside bar for the sunset.

Day 2

Hol Chan Marine Reserve + Shark Ray Alley

Half-day snorkel tour to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. The channel at Hol Chan is 30 feet deep and dense with grouper, snapper, and barracuda. Shark Ray Alley puts you in calm, shallow water surrounded by nurse sharks and southern stingrays, one of the most accessible marine wildlife encounters in the Caribbean.

Phase 02

Reef days

Day 3

Caye Caulker

Water taxi south to Caye Caulker (30 min). The island's motto is 'Go Slow' for good reason, no traffic, no stress, one long beach road. Swim at The Split, kayak the lagoon side, and book a manatee tour to Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary for a late afternoon.

Day 4

Caye Caulker, Reef Day

Full reef day from Caye Caulker. The island sits right on the Barrier Reef, making trips shorter and less expensive than from San Pedro. Options: a second snorkel, a beginner SCUBA dive, windsurfing on the lagoon, or a sailboat sunset trip.

Day 5

Return to Ambergris, Water Sports

Water taxi back to San Pedro. Day for water sports: parasailing for aerial reef and island views, paddleboarding north toward the mangrove lagoons, kayaking, or a spa afternoon at one of the island's resort spas.

Phase 03

Slow finish

Day 6

Great Blue Hole or Turneffe Atoll

Advanced divers: full-day liveaboard to the Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef (about 1,000 ft across, roughly 407 ft deep). Snorkelers or beginner divers: day trip to Turneffe Atoll, the closest of Belize's three coral atolls and an exceptional diving and snorkeling destination in its own right.

Day 7

Final Morning + Departure

Final swim off the beach or a morning kayak before water taxi or domestic flight back to Belize City. The journey north over the reef from the air is a fitting farewell.

Insider tip

Travelers constantly compare San Pedro and Caye Caulker for short beach trips. If you mainly want a relaxed snorkel-and-swim week, do not overload it with extra hotel changes just because the islands are close together.

How to get around

Transfers, timings, and whether you need a car

One transfer in and one out. From the international airport, either a domestic flight of 15 to 20 minutes or a taxi into Belize City plus a water taxi, roughly 45 minutes to Caye Caulker or 75 to San Pedro. After that, everything is on foot, by bike, by golf cart, or on a boat.

Fly in and boat out, or the reverse. The flight is faster and gives you the reef from the air; the water taxi is a fraction of the price.
On Ambergris, a golf cart for one or two days is enough. Renting for the whole week is expensive and mostly unused.
Caye Caulker is small enough to walk end to end, and bikes cover the rest.
For departure, allow at least two hours at the international airport plus the transfer. If your flight is before noon, fly rather than take the boat.

Book here for: The widest choice of hotels, dive shops, and restaurants, and the easiest island logistics
Which area: Central San Pedro puts you within walking distance of dive shops, tour desks, and dinner. North Ambergris, above the bridge, has the most glamorous resorts and the best pools, but you will depend on the island ferry or a golf cart to get to town.
Beach and swimming: Miles of beachfront, though the reef sits close enough that much of the shore is shallow seagrass. Most resorts swim from docks and piers rather than straight off the sand.
The trade-off: Busier, pricier, and more built up than Caye Caulker. Traffic on the narrow main streets is real, and beachfront varies enormously by stretch.

Book here for: Barefoot island days and short, good-value reef trips
Which area: Anywhere on the island is walkable, so choose by noise: near the Split for bars and swimming, mid-island for a balance, and the quieter south end for sleep. Rooms with a pool are the exception here rather than the rule, so check if that matters to you.
Beach and swimming: No broad beach. Swimming happens at the Split, off private docks, and from boats, which suits people who want water access more than sunbathing space.
The trade-off: Small. Two or three nights suits most people, and the swimming is off the Split and off docks rather than from a wide beach.

Late November to May is the dry window and gives the calmest seas. February to April has the best reef visibility of the year.
Sargassum can wash onto east-facing island beaches, mainly in the summer months. It varies year to year and even week to week, so check current conditions rather than a general rule.
September and October are the peak of the storm season, and some island hotels and restaurants close for part of it.
If the sea is rough on your reef day, move it. Boat crews will tell you honestly, and Hol Chan on a calm morning is a different reserve from Hol Chan in chop.

What to eat along this route

Island food in Belize is Creole with a strong fishing accent: whole grilled snapper, conch fritters and ceviche when conch is in season, lobster when it is, and rice and beans cooked in coconut milk under all of it. The street barbecues that set up along the front in the evening are consistently better value than the restaurants behind them. June brings lobster festivals to San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia, which mark the opening of the season. Ask which seasons are currently open before ordering either lobster or conch.

Do not touch, stand on, or collect coral, and keep a few feet of distance from nurse sharks and rays even when they come to you. Contact damages the animal and the reef.
Use a mineral, reef-safe sunscreen, or better, wear a rash guard. Most reserve operators will ask you to.
Snorkel and dive with operators licensed for the marine reserve you are visiting. Reserve fees fund the wardens who keep the no-take zones working.
Do not order lobster or conch outside their open seasons. The closed seasons exist to let stocks recover.
Carry a refillable bottle. Every hotel and boat on the cayes refills for free, and island waste has nowhere to go.

Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker for a beach week?

Ambergris for restaurant choice, dive shops, golf carts, and a wider range of hotels. Caye Caulker for price, sand streets, and a slower pace. The reef trips leave from both, so you are not giving up Hol Chan either way. On a full week, Ambergris usually wears better simply because there is more of it.

Does Belize actually have good beaches?

Honestly, mixed. The cayes have beachfront but the reef keeps the water shallow and seagrassy in many places, so a lot of the swimming happens off docks. Placencia and Hopkins on the mainland have the most swimmable sand. Belize's water is the attraction; the beach is the frame around it.

Is one week on one island too long?

Not if the week is the point. With six nights in one place you get the earliest snorkel boat twice, two genuinely idle days, and no packing mornings. Travelers who regret single-base weeks are usually the ones who wanted the ATM Cave as well.

Do I need to worry about sargassum?

Sometimes. Sargassum arrives on east-facing beaches mainly in the summer months, and it varies enormously by year, by week, and by stretch of shoreline. Check current conditions close to your dates rather than assuming, and remember that pier and boat swimming is unaffected.
