Other core San Ignacio days include Xunantunich (the easy, family-friendly Maya site), Cahal Pech (a smaller ruin walkable from town), and Caracol, which is a longer drive but the largest Maya site in Belize. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Rio Frio Cave, 1,000-foot waterfalls, swimming holes, sits just south and works as a full-day outing.

Lodging ranges from mid-range in-town hotels to high-end eco-lodges strung along the Macal River and up into the Pine Ridge. Chaa Creek, Blancaneaux Lodge, Ka'ana, and Hidden Valley Inn are the names most often mentioned by repeat visitors. Eco-lodges here tend to include on-site activity offerings, night walks, birding, river canoes, tubing, that aren't really available as day trips.

When to go: the dry season from February through May is the best for cave access and road conditions. ATM Cave closes when river levels rise after heavy rain, which is more common June-November. Pairs almost universally with Ambergris, Placencia, or Caye Caulker as a two-base itinerary.
