Hopkins is a coastal Garifuna village roughly an hour south of Dangriga on a sandy, mostly flat stretch of Stann Creek District. It's smaller and more residential than Placencia, with a single main road running parallel to the beach and lodges spread north and south of the village proper. You get there by 40 minutes of flight to Dangriga plus a 30-minute drive, or by a 3-hour drive from Belize City down the Hummingbird Highway, one of the country's most scenic road trips.

The village is the cultural center of Garifuna Belize, drumming, punta dancing, Hudut (a fish stew with mashed plantain) served in family kitchens, and a pace that stays genuinely local despite growing resort density. Even the higher-end stays like Hamanasi and Jaguar Reef sit lightly on the landscape; this isn't a resort strip. Travelers who want to understand Belize's cultural diversity beyond the Maya sites often leave Hopkins with it as the highlight of the trip.

Activity-wise, Hopkins is the single best base for Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, a 45-minute drive inland to the world's first jaguar preserve. Cockscomb trails range from flat river walks to a full-day Victoria Peak expedition. The offshore snorkel and dive sites, South Water Caye, Glover's Reef, and Tobacco Caye, are reached by boat from Hopkins Bay and are noticeably less crowded than the Ambergris reef sites. Hamanasi in particular has a strong dive-boat operation if that's your priority.

Lodging is mostly in the $180-400/night range. Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort and Jaguar Reef Lodge are the two most-booked properties; Belizean Dreams Resort sits a step below in price but with similar amenities. Self-catering villas and budget guesthouses exist if you want village-immersion over resort comfort.

When to go: November through April for the cleanest beach conditions; May through October runs warmer and wetter, with occasional sargassum, but also lower prices and fewer guests. Hopkins rarely feels crowded regardless of season.

Who Hopkins fits: travelers who want beach and jungle in one base (Cockscomb is the closest major wildlife park to any Belize beach town), Garifuna culture and food specifically, and divers or snorkelers who prefer quieter southern-reef sites over the high-traffic Ambergris crowds.
