Belize City is the country's largest urban center and its main international gateway, Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) sits on the outskirts, and the Marine Terminal downtown is where water taxis depart for Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. Most first-time visitors pass through rather than stay, because the beaches, reef, and jungle are somewhere else. But if your flight lands late, departs early, or you want a quick half-day of Caribbean colonial history, one night here is often the most practical choice.

The Fort George neighborhood is where the handful of tourist-oriented hotels cluster, Great House Inn, Radisson Fort George, and the Princess Ramada occupy the waterfront around the Baron Bliss lighthouse and the Museum of Belize. This is the safe, walkable tourist core. The rest of the city is residential and industrial; most guidebooks suggest staying inside Fort George and using taxis for anything outside it.

Things to do if you have a half-day: the Museum of Belize (a small but well-curated Maya artifact collection in the former colonial prison), the Swing Bridge (still a manually operated drawbridge over Haulover Creek), the Fort Street Tourism Village (cruise-ship-adjacent shopping, best skipped if no ship is in port), and the Saturday market near Battlefield Park. Beyond the city itself, the Belize Zoo (a 45-minute drive) is a genuine highlight for first-time visitors, 45 native species, all rescued, in naturalistic enclosures. Altun Ha Maya site is the closest major ruin (50 minutes inland).

Transport in and out: water taxis to the cayes run from 7 AM to 5:30 PM, every 90 minutes or so. Domestic flights from BZE to San Pedro, Caulker, Dangriga, and Placencia run roughly hourly during daylight. Southern Highway buses depart from the downtown terminal. Car rentals are available at the international airport, most visitors don't need a car on the cayes but do for San Ignacio, Hopkins, Placencia, or Toledo trips.

Who Belize City fits: travelers with a late-arrival or early-departure flight, groups doing a 1-night transit stop before moving onward, and specific-interest visitors (colonial history, Maya archaeology museums, Belize Zoo). Not a destination stay for most trip types, one or two nights on either end of a longer itinerary is the typical pattern.
