Belize has five distinct cultural traditions, Maya, Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, and East Indian, each with its own cuisine, music, and living heritage. This route connects them from the colonial waterfront in Belize City to Maya villages in the Toledo foothills.

Day 1
Belize City
Arrive and begin with Belize City's historic district. St. John's Cathedral (construction began 1812; bricks from England used as ship ballast) is the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America. Visit the Museum of Belize, housed in the original 1857 jail, and the House of Culture, the former seat of colonial government.

Day 2
Altun Ha + Community Baboon Sanctuary
Morning at Altun Ha, the closest major Maya site to Belize City. A jade head of the sun god Kinich Ahau was discovered here (the largest carved jade object found in any Maya community; the image appears on Belize's $10 note). Afternoon: Bermudian Landing's Community Baboon Sanctuary for 1,000+ howler monkeys protected by a local conservation agreement.

Day 3
San Ignacio, Cayo
Transfer west to San Ignacio, the cultural hub of Cayo District. Late afternoon visit to Cahal Pech, a Maya ceremonial center on the edge of town occupied from 1100 BCE. The on-site museum contains pre-Classic artifacts including the oldest carved stela found in Belize. Evening: Burns Avenue street food and BBQ.

Day 4
Xunantunich + San Jose Succotz
Cross the Mopan River by hand-cranked ferry to Xunantunich. El Castillo's carved friezes, depicting astronomical and deity symbols, are the best preserved in Belize. After the site, lunch on typical Belizean fare in the village of San Jose Succotz before returning to San Ignacio.

Day 5
Hummingbird Highway → Dangriga
Drive the scenic Hummingbird Highway southeast, stopping at Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce Factory (the hot sauce is a national institution, the factory welcomes visitors). Arrive in Dangriga, the 'cultural capital' of Belize and heartland of the Garifuna people. Evening: live drumming in the town's bars.

Day 6
Hopkins
12 miles south to Hopkins, an authentic Garifuna fishing village. Participate in a drum-making workshop, try traditional hudut (fish stew with mashed plantain and coconut milk), and kayak along the beach at sunset. Hopkins is one of the best places in Belize to experience Garifuna culture in a living, working community.

Day 7
Ambergris Caye
Fly or water taxi to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. The Marco Gonzalez Maya site sits at the southern tip of the island, an ancient trading port that connected the island Maya with the mainland. Evening along the seafront with a blend of Creole, Mestizo, and international cultures.

Day 8
Departure
Morning browse of San Pedro's craft stalls and galleries before your water taxi or domestic flight back to PGIA. Look for Belizean hardwood carvings, Garifuna drums, and Marie Sharp's sauces as souvenirs.

If you can time your visit for November 19th, Dangriga's Garifuna Settlement Day is one of the most authentic cultural celebrations in all of Central America, dramatic re-enactments, drumming, and traditional food all day.
