Belize has five distinct cultural traditions, Maya, Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, and East Indian, each with its own cuisine, music, and living heritage. This route connects them from the colonial waterfront in Belize City to Maya villages in the Toledo foothills.

Colonial coast & history

Days 1 to 2
Belize City + Central Coast
Arrive and spend two days on the Central Coast. Altun Ha, the Community Baboon Sanctuary, and a Belize City carriage tour covering the Museum of Belize, House of Culture, St. John's Cathedral, and Fort George Point. Optional: Old Belize cultural exhibition.

Day 3
Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary
Detour to Crooked Tree for a morning canoe or birding walk, the Annual Cashew Festival in May draws the whole community together. The village and its lagoon system give a window into traditional Creole rural life.

Day 4
Lamanai, Orange Walk
Classic boat tour from Orange Walk Town to Lamanai, the journey up the New River is as culturally rich as the site itself, passing Mennonite farmland and Mestizo villages before reaching the 3,000-year Maya ruins.

Day 5
Northern Belize, Corozal + Cerros
Corozal Town, 10 miles from the Mexican border: the East Indian Cultural Museum (the only one in the region), the Town Hall mural depicting the town's history from Maya times to the present, and the Santa Rita site inside the town boundary. Boat to Cerros across the bay.

Day 6
San Ignacio, Cayo
Transfer west to San Ignacio. Cahal Pech museum and ceremonial center on the edge of town, then an evening exploring the Mestizo and Creole food culture of Burns Avenue, escabeche, tamales, and the best street BBQ in Belize.

Day 7
Xunantunich + El Pilar
Hand-cranked ferry to Xunantunich. Afternoon: El Pilar on the Belize-Guatemala border, one of the most thoughtfully interpreted Maya forest gardens in the region.

Day 8
Mennonite Community + Benque Viejo
Day trip west toward Benque Viejo del Carmen. Visit Chechem Ha Cave, discovered by a local farmer and still approached through privately managed land. The cave entrance is decorated with Maya motifs and the chambers contain large storage jars lining the walls.

Day 9
Hummingbird Highway → Dangriga
Drive southeast through some of Belize's most dramatic scenery. Stop at the Marie Sharp's factory and arrive in Dangriga in time for evening Garifuna drumming. Dangriga celebrates the Garifuna arrival on November 19th with a large coastal re-enactment each year.

Day 10
Hopkins + Garifuna Immersion
Full day in Hopkins: drum-making workshop, traditional cooking class (hudut, cassava dumplings), and an evening of punta and paranda music. Hopkins is the most accessible Garifuna cultural experience in Belize.

Day 11
Mayflower Bocawina + Maya Sites
Mayflower Bocawina National Park contains three Maya ceremonial sites, Mayflower, T'au Witz, and Maintzunum, alongside waterfalls and zip-lining. These sites receive a fraction of the visitors that Caracol or Xunantunich do.

Days 12 to 13
Punta Gorda + Toledo Maya Villages
Fly or take the Southern Highway to Punta Gorda. Two days exploring Toledo: the Chocolate Festival (if in May), the morning market, Nim Li Punit with its 55-foot stela, Lubaantun's mortar-free construction, and a night in a Maya homestay with the cacao trail experience.

Day 14
Ambergris Caye
Fly north to San Pedro for a contrast, the International Costa Maya Festival (summer) brings multicultural music, dance, and pageants. The Marco Gonzalez Maya site at the island's southern tip adds one more archaeological layer.

Day 15
Departure
Final morning in San Pedro before water taxi or domestic flight to PGIA.

Plan your Chocolate Festival visit for Toledo if traveling in May. The multi-day event includes a Friday 'Wine and Chocolate Night,' a Saturday street fair with chocolate demonstrations, and Sunday traditional Maya performances.
