Belize has five distinct cultural traditions, Maya, Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, and East Indian, each with its own cuisine, music, and living heritage. This route connects them from the colonial waterfront in Belize City to Maya villages in the Toledo foothills.

Colonial coast & history

Day 1
Belize City
Arrive and explore Belize City's historic core, St. John's Cathedral, the Museum of Belize, and the House of Culture. A horse-drawn carriage tour is the most atmospheric way to cover the colonial waterfront district.

Day 2
Lamanai, Orange Walk District
One of Belize's most memorable experiences: boat from Orange Walk Town along the New River Lagoon to Lamanai. 3,000+ years of continuous Maya occupation make this the longest-lived Maya site in Belize. The boat journey passes crocodiles, kingfishers, and howler monkeys before you reach the unique limestone-carved masks of the High Temple.

Day 3
Northern Belize, Corozal + Cerros
Drive north to Corozal Town on the Mexican border. Santa Rita Maya site (ancient Chetumal, ~1500 BCE) sits within the town itself. Boat across Corozal Bay to Cerros, the only coastal Maya site in Belize, with a main stairway flanked by Venus and sun god masks. Return through Sarteneja fishing village.

Day 4
San Ignacio, Western Cayo
Transfer south and west to San Ignacio. Afternoon at Cahal Pech, 34 structures on the edge of town, occupied from 1100 BCE to 850 CE. The museum at the entrance has the oldest carved stela found in Belize.

Day 5
Xunantunich + El Pilar
Hand-cranked ferry to Xunantunich's El Castillo. Afternoon: El Pilar straddling the Belize-Guatemala border, a partially excavated site showcasing a Maya forest garden and traditional agricultural practices still visible in the landscape.

Day 6
Hummingbird Highway → Dangriga
Scenic drive southeast. Stop at Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce Factory, the Dangriga-based sauce is a Belizean cultural touchstone and one of the most interesting small-factory visits in the country. Arrive in Dangriga for Garifuna culture, drumming, and traditional food.

Day 7
Hopkins + Cockscomb
Morning in Hopkins, drum-making workshop and traditional Garifuna cuisine at a local family restaurant (try sere lasus: fish soup with plantain balls). Afternoon drive to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary for an orientation hike.

Day 8
Punta Gorda, Toledo
Domestic flight or bus south to Punta Gorda, a quiet seaside town with a lively morning market selling local produce and goods brought by boat from Guatemala. The mixing of Maya, Garifuna, and East Indian cultures makes Toledo one of Belize's most culturally distinct districts.

Day 9
Maya Villages + Cacao Trail
Full day in the Toledo Maya villages. Stay with a Mopan or Kekchi Maya family through the Homestay Program, participate in tortilla preparation, visit a milpa farm, and follow the Cacao Trail from growing through fermentation to chocolate. Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun are nearby archaeological sites with excellent caretaker guides.

Day 10
Departure via Belize City
Domestic flight from Punta Gorda to Belize City for your international connection. The short flight over the southern Maya Mountains is a fitting final view of the landscape you've spent 10 days exploring.
Insider tip
The Maya Homestay Program in Toledo requires advance booking through the Toledo Ecotourism Association. Stay at least two nights to participate in tortilla-making, milpa farming, and the full cacao trail experience.
