Belize protects over 40% of its territory in national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and marine reserves. The nature route threads through the country's most ecologically significant landscapes, from the jaguar forests of Cockscomb to the jabiru stork lagoons of Crooked Tree.

Days 1 to 2
Crooked Tree + Community Baboon Sanctuary
Two days on the Northern Wildlife Corridor. Dawn canoe at Crooked Tree for jabiru storks and migratory waterbirds; Community Baboon Sanctuary at Bermudian Landing for howler monkeys and community conservation storytelling.

Day 3
Lamanai Boat Tour + Belize Zoo
New River Lagoon boat to Lamanai, crocodiles, kingfishers, and howler monkeys en route. Afternoon at Belize Zoo, the most approachable native wildlife experience in the country.

Day 4
San Ignacio, Western Cayo
Transfer west. Macal River wildlife walk and orientation in the Cayo District, Belize's most ecologically diverse region.

Day 5
Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve
Full day in Mountain Pine Ridge: Hidden Valley Falls, Rio On Pools, and Rio Frio Cave. Scan the pine ridges for Montezuma oropendolas, blue-crowned motmots, and the keel-billed toucan (Belize's national bird).

Day 6
Barton Creek Cave + Caracol
Morning Barton Creek canoe, then an afternoon road trip into Chiquibul Forest toward Caracol, even the approach offers excellent wildlife spotting.

Day 7
Caracol, Chiquibul Forest Reserve
Full day at Caracol. The 25,000-acre archaeological zone is home to scarlet macaws, Baird's tapirs, and all five of Belize's wild cats in addition to the ruins themselves.

Day 8
Caves Branch + Hummingbird Highway
Cave tubing through Nohoch Che'en Park, then the scenic drive southeast on the Hummingbird Highway through karst hills and broadleaf jungle.

Day 9
Hopkins + Cockscomb Basin
Arrive Hopkins. Afternoon: first Cockscomb Basin trail walk, the park entrance area is excellent for toucans and howler monkeys even on a short visit.

Day 10
Cockscomb Full Day, Jaguar Reserve
Full day in the world's first jaguar preserve. The combined Cockscomb and Bladen Nature Reserve protection zone gives Belize's jaguar population 250,000 acres. Evening guided walk is essential for cat sightings.

Day 11
Mayflower Bocawina + Red Bank (seasonal)
Morning: Mayflower Bocawina waterfalls and canopy zip-lining. Afternoon: Red Bank village (January to March for scarlet macaws) or Monkey River boat trip.

Placencia + Gladden Spit (seasonal)
Placencia peninsula. March to June: full moon whale shark dive at Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, the largest aggregation of whale sharks in the Western Hemisphere during snapper spawning events.

Days 13 to 14
Punta Gorda + Paynes Creek National Park
Punta Gorda as base for Paynes Creek National Park, the most biologically diverse protected area in Belize, with 300+ bird species, white-tail deer, and howler monkeys. Port Honduras Marine Reserve's 100+ mangrove islands offer kayaking and manatee encounters. Hokeb Ha Cave near Blue Creek village adds a demanding rainforest cave experience.

Day 15
Departure via Caye Caulker
Option: one final night on Caye Caulker for a reef snorkel and manatee encounter at Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary before your flight. Water taxi to Belize City connects to PGIA.
Insider tip
The 15-day route is long enough to add Paynes Creek National Park in Toledo, it has more habitat variety than any other protected area in Belize, and receives very few visitors. Hire a licensed guide from Punta Gorda.
