Belize protects over 40% of its territory in national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and marine reserves. The nature route threads through the country's most ecologically significant landscapes, from the jaguar forests of Cockscomb to the jabiru stork lagoons of Crooked Tree.

Day 1
Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary
Arrive directly to Crooked Tree for a dawn canoe session, November to May is peak season for jabiru storks and migratory wading birds across the 16,400-acre lagoon system.

Day 2
Lamanai Boat Tour
Morning boat from Orange Walk Town along the New River Lagoon to Lamanai. The boat ride itself is one of Belize's best wildlife corridors: crocodiles, kingfishers, purple gallinules, and howler monkeys before the ruins come into view. Lamanai's howler monkey population is one of the most reliably observed in the country.

Day 3
Community Baboon Sanctuary + Belize Zoo
Bermudian Landing's 1,000+ howler monkeys, then the Belize Zoo in the afternoon, tapirs, jaguars, peccaries, and harpy eagles in naturalistic forest enclosures.

Day 4
San Ignacio, Western Cayo
Transfer west. Afternoon Macal River walk with local wildlife guide. San Ignacio is the jumping-off point for Belize's most biodiverse interior regions.

Day 5
Mountain Pine Ridge + Barton Creek Cave
Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve: Rio On Pools, Hidden Valley Falls (the tallest in Belize at ~1,600 feet), and Rio Frio Cave with its impressive 65-foot entrance arch. Late afternoon: Barton Creek Cave by canoe.

Day 6
Caves Branch + Hummingbird Highway
Cave tubing through Nohoch Che'en Park's river system, then drive southeast on the Hummingbird Highway, one of Belize's most ecologically rich road corridors, through karst forest to coastal lowlands.

Day 7
Hopkins + Mayflower Bocawina
Arrive Hopkins. Afternoon hike in Mayflower Bocawina National Park to Bocawina Falls and Three Sisters Falls, the park has some of the most accessible waterfall walks in Belize and good bird diversity year-round.

Day 8
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
Full day in Cockscomb, 128,000 acres, 300+ bird species, all five Belizean wild cat species. Dawn hike for toucans and macaws; midday tapir spotting along the river; evening guided walk for jaguar activity.

Day 9
Red Bank Village (Jan to Mar) or Monkey River
January to March: hike to Red Bank village viewing area for scarlet macaws feeding on fruit trees, hundreds congregate in a relatively small area, an extraordinary sight. Other months: boat tour to Monkey River for howler monkeys, manatees, and crocodiles in a coastal river ecosystem.

Day 10
Departure from Dangriga/Placencia
Domestic flight back to Belize City. The aerial perspective over southern Belize's protected reserves makes a compelling final impression.
Insider tip
Scarlet macaws congregate at Red Bank village from January through March to feed on seasonal fruit. If your travel window includes those months, the 10-day nature route is the ideal itinerary to add a Red Bank afternoon.
